Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging examination that utilises high frequency sound waves to creates images of internal body structures. Ultrasounds are performed by qualified sonographers who utilise a handheld transducer, moving the transducer device over a targeted area to generate images. Radiology Queensland Group provides a variety of ultrasound examinations including general, musculoskeletal, obstetric, breast, cardiac and vascular services.

Ultrasound examinations require an appointment. Please phone, present, or submit your referral to our team who will provide you with details on the next available appointment.

Many ultrasound exams require preparation which may be in in the form of fasting or presenting with a full bladder. Our team will provide specific instructions at the time of booking, and these should be followed carefully. You may be asked to wear a gown for the examination, and it is advised that a comfortable two piece outfit is It is important to arrive 15 mins prior to fill in any necessary paperwork to avoid delays in your appointment.
Please bring your referral/request form and, if applicable, your Medicare or DVA If this is a work injury, your Workcover claim number may be required, or let our team know if you are intending to lodge a claim.

Your ultrasound will be performed by an experienced Sonographer who will escort you to the examination room, explain the procedure, and instruct you on how to prepare. For most ultrasound appointments, you will be required to lie down on a bed, depending on the area that needs to be scanned, you may be seated upright. Our sonographer will place a gel onto your skin, or the transducer which enables them to seamlessly scan over the area of interest. Ultrasounds are “real time” images which is displayed on the monitor. Once the ultrasound is complete, the images will be reviewed and interpreted by a Radiologist, a doctor specialising in Radiology, who will prepare a report for your referrer.

Radiology Queensland Group bulk bills most Medicare eligible services, however some examinations incur a fee. Our booking staff will advise you if a fee applies.
Please allow 24 to 48 hours for your report. If you have been instructed to return to your healthcare professional immediately following the scan, it is important to advise one of our staff members. If your exam is clinically urgent, this will be prioritised, and our team will communicate with our Radiologist to ensure a prompt report is provided.
